Resident Evil and Multi-player traditionally don’t go hand in hand.

Take Resident Evil 5 for example. Co-Op was really good. Surviving with a friend was great fun, however the Versus Mode was all kinds of horrible. The Resident Evil style just doesn’t work when it comes to a Deathmatch. Standing still to shoot just didn’t satisfy today’s Call of Duty kids.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is now only a few months away, and it’s hoping to prove that not only can Resident Evil do Multi-player, it can also be a hell of a lot of fun. The change in gameplay will be the biggest contributor to this, with the game now being a more traditional 3rd Person Shooter, allowing you to run and gun.

The latest trailer for the game show’s off a little bit of the Multi-player and hints at what we can expect, come the games release (23/03/2011).

The games Heroes mode will feature well known Resident Evil characters, in a 4 on 4 Team Deathmatch, but it’s not quite that straight forward. The maps will also be populated with various Zombie’s and other Bi-Organic Weapons who will attack whoever get’s in their way. This to me sounds like the perfect combination of two great game modes from various other shooters, Deathmatch and Survival. Taking down your opponents while a licker is after your face could prove very tricky.

The well known characters on offer in this mode include…..

Leon S. Kennedy – A rookie cop in the maelstrom of Raccoon City. Born with natural survival skills, he boldly faces any threat.

Claire Redfield – Claire comes to Raccoon City looking for her brother, Chris. Her unyielding personality allows her to take on Zombies and Bi-Organic Weapons without hesitation.

Carlos Oliveira – A member of the Umbrella Bio-hazard Countermeasure Service dispatched into Raccoon City to help rescue survivors. He is willing to put his own life on the line if it means rescuing a friend.

Jill Valentine – A survivor of the Arklay incident, Jill comes to Raccoon City to uncover the truth behind Umbrella on her own. She is strong willed and a skilled fighter.

V.S.

Hunk – The Leader of the Umbrella Security Service, Alpha Unit. Having survived and succeeded in several missions, he has become known as “the god of death”.

Nicholai Ginovaef – Having handled several secret missions during his time in the special military forces, he is at the top of his game. But he is a cruel man with a dark purpose.

Lone Wolf – A valued member of the Umbrella Security Service and legendary helicopter pilot. He’s skilled with firearms and proficient at tactical combat.

Ada Wong – A female spy who has infiltrated Raccoon City. Even in extreme situations, she remains calm and possesses top notch fighting abilities.

What a line up. I think the good guy’s have got a better selection of characters, but I’m sure that if the game proves to be successful we could see DLC packs in the future, that could add more characters to the mode.

I think this new direction for the Resident Evil series could prove to be very fun indeed and I can’t wait to give the Multi-player a go.
